Modern Architecture has a storied history in Los Angeles' Eastside beginning in 1920. It was the year Rudolf Schindler moved to Los Angeles, to oversee the construction of the Barnsdall House for Frank Lloyd Wright. Richard Neutra followed, with completion of the Lovell Health House (in Los Feliz) and the Jardinette Apartments (in Hollywood), both in 1927. The builder-designer William Kesling completed his first Streamline Moderne "Model Home" in 1935 (at a cost of $3600, popularizing modern design on a budget). The list that followed is a virtual "Who's Who" of early Modernism: Gregory Ain, Harwell Hamilton Harris, John Lautner, Allyn E. Morris, Lloyd Wright, and Raphael Soriano.
In 2010, there are at least as many architects working today in the Los Feliz-Silver Lake environs, making their mark and continuing the tradition. Our list will acquaint you with some of them.
